If you’ve never been in the advertising or TV businesses, this is a useful intro. This is the part where ~60 billion dollars from brands moves through the hands of the agencies, who give it to the networks. $60 billion a year.

This is not done with spreadsheets and algorithms. It’s done with parties, alcohol, steak, and big musical numbers —all at a scale you’d find shocking. I like all those things (not musical numbers). But I don’t confuse them with the conditions necessary to understand a product, evaluate a risk, or do business.

We live in a moment where inefficiencies are smoothing out quickly. The upfronts were born in a moment where it was legitimately difficult to exchange information without convening a crowd. But those days are over, for better and worse. It would be like bringing a bunch of insanely overpaid actors to the NYSE to pretend they still trade stocks there. Oh, wait.

This is the part of the story where everyone just keeps doing what they’ve been doing. Not because it makes any sense, but because they don’t know what else to do.

The parts of the story that come after that part are usually sort of sad.

The Wantrepreenur, the Glory getter Wannabe-Steve-Jobs’. They want the admiration, the envy, the success. They’re just not willing to do anything to jeopardize that dream. Mounting an all out effort for revenue and failing would kill that dream. So don’t ask those users who say they will pay to pay. Don’t knock on doors. Keep playing in the pitch contests and keep talking to the press.

The Entrepreneur are more like Job from the story of Job in the Bible. They’re in it for their faith in the product, for thier belief in their vision. They’re willing to endure without the need for instant gratification. They know that they’re faith will be affirmed when they generat profitable revenue. When they can prove they’ve built a real living thing…. a business…. a revenue generator.

They’re not play acting. They’re the real thing. They’re willing to suffer without glory in the faith that they’re hard work will persevere.

There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter—the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something.

Of these three trembling cities, the greatest is the last—the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York’s high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements.

Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.
”

-
Here is New York by E.B.
It’s this time of the year - the NBA Playoffs are just to begin. Is it gonna be exciting ? Will there be any surprises or will this be a walk in a park for Miami. Looking back at the regular season it sure does look like it’s all about Lebron and co. But the playoffs are the playoffs and I just hope there will emerge really tough contender for them. Will it be OKC again or the old pack at San Antonio ? Will Melo stand up for the task leading Knicks to the finals ? And what about Chris Paul and the Lob City? Well, we’re gonna find out about these soon but for now, here goes my first round picks.

Eastern Conference:

1. Miami Heat vs Milwaukee Bucks:

Nothing really interesting in here. Bucks are not a real threat for Miami, so the series will wrap up in four games. It would be a really really big surprise if Milwaukee could snap up one win. My verdict: 4:0 for Miami.

2. New York Knicks vs Boston Celtics:

This is my (and probably not only mine) favorite match up in the first round. It’s gonna be tough, it’s gonna be intense and I think it’s gonna be really close. Boston is probably the least comfortable opponent for Knicks (beside Miami of course) so the series will be long and tedious for both team. The main factor here is Melo. If he will play the efficient, unselfish basketball with high percentage shots from behind the arch the Knicks will win it no matter what. But it will be tough and as much as I’m rooting for Knicks deep inside I don’t believe they will accomplish much in the playoffs. Let’s hope I’m wrong so I’ll go with 4:3 for Knicks.

3. Indiana Pacers vs Atlanta Hawks:

Not really interesting match up for me, so I won’t elaborate on this. Paul Gorge will lead Indiana to the second round in about 6 games. My take: 4:2 for Indiana.

4. Brooklyn Nets vs Chicago Bulls:

Nets are a pack of really good players with whole bunch of problems and not too big heart to play. So in my opinion nothing has change in Nets association after the move. They have the potential, but the Bulls are bigger and much tougher team. Even without D. Rose Chicago will advance to the second round. The only chance for Brooklyn is Joe Johnson stepping up playing the best basketball of his career, which is really unlikely. My pick here: 4:2 for Bulls.

Western Conference:

1. Oklahoma City Thunder vs Houston Rockets:

Old pals are reuniting. It will be interesting how James Harden perform against his old team but I don’t think the match up will be tight. KD and co. will wrap up the series in no more than 5 games. My take: 4:1 for OKC.

2. San Antonio Spurs vs Los Angeles Lakers:

Greg Popovic did everything he could to avoid Lakers in the first round. Yes, I think he on purpose gave up first place in Western Conference, just to avoid Lakers, because they are the least comfortable opponent for them. But what goes around comes around and after unbelievable finish Lakers advanced to the seventh place. And the Lakers are the great enigma of this playoffs. Unfortunately without Kobe they won’t do much (with him, Lakers would have legitimate chance to beat Spurs), so my pick here is 4:1 to Spurs.

3. Denver Nuggets vs Golden State Warriors:

This one is hard to predict for me. I don’t really know much about those two teams. Denver has played really good basketball in regular season but I don’t know if this type of system is sustainable in the playoffs. I have my doubts, but I think that it will be enough for Warriors (unfortunately, because I do like Golden State). I will be rooting for Warriors, but my take here is 4:2 for Nuggets.

4. Los Angeles Clippers vs Memphis Grizzlies:

Will the lob city led by Chris Paul and Blake Griffin achieve something big this year ? Many says that the kind of game Clippers plays is not suited for playoffs and that they really don’t have good system, but in my opinion the team is deep enough to ride past the Grizzlies. Do they achieve something more ? I hope so, but I don’t really know. I don’t think they are able to beat San Antonio or OKC but lets wait and see how the first round will develop. In this match up I go with 4:3 for Clippers.
